TRAVEL JOURNAL SURFTRIP PORTUGAL ERICEIRA NOVEMBER 2008

18.12.08 - Surftrip Portugal Ericeira November 2008

November 5th 2008, Christian Bryn, Henrik Bydal, Hans Råstad, Asgaut Mjølne, Andreas Erga and I met behind the break of the waves for the first rides of our trip at St Juliao beach near Ericeira. Besides Asgaut and Andreas, the rest of us had started the trip 14 hours earlier that day.

We had rented the ship, a 6 persons appartment 2km outside Ericeira. Couldn´t been better. With the view of the waves from our balcony, six good mates and 4 more days of surf.

The journey started with waves expected to be around 3 meters, which in Norway would not been to big, but in Portugal the power of the swell is a whole different story. We tried out the famous spot Ribeira D´ilhas were the waves looked like from surfing magazines from the view above, but hurted like hell when they got slammed in your head on the way out. Those waves were too big for most of us.

Peniche

Friday we decided to take a road trip up to Peniche, about 45 minutes drive north of Ericeira. That was a good choice. We found a sheltered spot which produced both huge and medium sized waves. That was a great day for surfing.

Saturday, still the same swell so we decided to drive up to Peniche for another nice day of sheltered surfing. The weather was good and the mood could not been better.
The south side of Peniche was covered with mostly big and mushy waves, but still god some good surf to catch.

After the surf we decided to go and check out the famous Supertubos. We had lunch, and Andreas was keen on trying the surf. It was not too big, but the wave is super quick and we had heard it could be some localism.

I had my camera with me to take some photos. Henrik headed back to get his, but after 5 minutes came running back. The car had been broken into.

They took all the backpacks included 2 cameras worth more than you would like to think about. It sucked, and the next 3 hours was gone in waste finding and waiting at the local police station followed by a shitty surf session (for my part), but the others had a good session.

Either way, after a long day, we had a last night out and had some good stories to bring back home. The tradition goes on...
